Construction

The Construction Collaborate Skills Partnership (CSP) led by Leeds College of Building is a partnership with other colleges in the Leeds City Region, including Wakefield College, Bradford College, Kirklees College and Luminate Education Group. These regular meetings also welcome employers and industry bodies to help understand the construction industry skills needs and what provision needs to be created to fill gaps.

The CSP has worked with employers to put together proposals for new apprenticeships. Firstly, Leeds College of Building has worked with The Institute of Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) to develop an Apprenticeship Standard in Construction Contracting Operations (CCO). This standard will support employees in technician roles who will use their knowledge and skills to support the construction management teams within local, regional, national and international organisations. They will develop digital skills for their construction project role and will optimise their own performance whilst maintaining and progressing working relationships with colleagues and managers.

The second is the development of a Degree Apprenticeship Programme, incorporating existing level four and five programmes with development to a level six, in conjunction with Leeds Beckett University. This will cover strands within the technical construction area, such as building services and civil engineering.

An entry-level course has been developed by Wakefield College, Consult DJH Ltd and i-Consult Ltd, which formalises the skills, attributes and knowledge required to be an effective Construction Site Operative.

Work with employers and industry bodies continues and more exciting pilot ideas are in the pipeline from Leeds College of Building and other colleges in the region. These pilot ideas will be offered to SMEs fully funded, to trial and test the provision. The CSP are keen to continue to engage with employers in this sector, so more pilots can be developed to aid the construction sector.
